Vampire Diaries' Candice Accola Shares Her Thoughts on Damon & Elena

Vampire Diaries star Candice Accola spoke about what her thoughts are for Elena and Damon come season 3.
Sitting down with HollywoodLife.com, Candice, who plays Caroline on The Vampire Diaries, dished on what she thinks will be happening in season 3 as far as the developing relationship between Damon (Ian Somerhalder) and Elena (Nina Dobrev).
“I think Elena has moved closer to Damon,” Candice said when asked about the pair's love potential on the next season, "I think that the writers did a beautiful job in setting up the cliffhanger in which I am kind of terrified to see what has become of Stefan (Paul Wesley) now that he has fed into his urges, no pun intended!"
Candice also brought up the issue that while Damon made so many mistakes, his love for Elena is still so pure. So, as the tormented vampire said on one of the more recent episodes, he will do whatever it takes to keep her alive, versus Stefan's main concern of just making her happy.
"That is almost like a different kind of love," Candice added.
However, the bubbly young actress does not necessarily have a favorite Salvatore brother for Elena, "I am not sure I know if one is better than the other yet."

'Vampire Diaries' EP Julie Plec Dishes On The Season 2 Finale

Vampire Diaries exec producer Julie Plec told fans that by the end of the season 2 finale, they’d know this show has no shortage of directions it can go in — and she wasn’t lying. EW caught up with her after tonight’s East Coast airing to talk about the hour’s big twists and where we’re headed come fall. If you haven’t yet watched the finale, come back to us when you’re ready. We cover it all.
ENTERTAINMENT WEEKLY: So I guessed that Klaus’ blood would be the cure for Damon’s werewolf bite, because I knew Damon couldn’t die. But it never occurred to me that Stefan would end up becoming Klaus’ wingman in exchange. How long have you known the season would end with Klaus and Stefan teaming up?
JULIE PLEC: Quite a long time. Look, in the same way that the last two seasons have been a very thick Damon journey as he’s come to terms with his humanity and the things that he hates most about himself, now Stefan, who has been struggling against the thing he hates most about himself from his past, is confronted with that. He’s sort of bitch-slapped by his own addiction, so to speak. And now he sacrificed the thing that he needed the most, which was his sense of strength and free will and will power over this problem that he has.

He had been drinking Elena’s blood to build up a tolerance to human blood, but clearly not enough.
There is moderation, and then there is sustained abuse. I think we just watched the beginnings of Stefan crossing over into that.
I loved that scene of him on the floor. It was like he was a bad dog who’d just devoured five entire bags of treats.
Probably Paul Wesley’s happiest day on set was getting to dive back into that side of Stefan and know that it is the beginning of a big journey for him and for that character to start really returning to the road that has caused him the most grief in his heart and in his mind for 145 years.
I was going to ask you what Paul’s reaction was to that twist.
It’s so funny. He sat down with me [earlier this season] and said, “I need to have a really serious conversation with you.” And I was like, “Uh huh.” And he said, “Stefan’s great as the hero, and he’s so admirable and he’s so honorable, and I love that about him. But as an actor, I feel like it would be great if we could dirty him up a little.” And I was like, “Uh huh.” And he looked at me, and he’s like, “You’re already doing this, aren’t you?” And I said, “Uh huh.” [Laughs] It was so great. Just as he was starting to feel like Stefan can do no wrong, we had been creating this almost heightened sense of heroism for Stefan for months knowing where we were going with it.

Katherine was trying to make Elena feel bad there at the end, like Stefan had given up his life with her to save Damon. But Elena can’t be angry, right, because she’d spent all season trying to sacrifice herself — and her future with Stefan — to save her family and friends?
Katherine was just being a little naughty bitch and stirring the pot. I love the look on Katherine’s face when she’s like, “Are you sure you care?” It’s so deliciously amused by the predicament, like the cat that ate the canary. She’s loving this. Elena, my god, if anything it won’t be anger — it will be guilt.
Katherine delivering the cure to Damon — we’re supposed to believe she did love him, on some level, as she said?
I think on whatever level Katherine is capable of caring about anyone other than herself. In her own way — more overtly and deeply with Stefan, but quietly with Damon — she let both of those boys into her heart just a tiny bit. One more than the other, obviously. Giving Damon his chance at life, that’s a very unKatherine-like thing to do. I love that she did it. While by no means is she a good girl now — she’s still looking out for No. 1 — she took a detour off her escape route to give him back what she took from him at the beginning of the season when she said to him, “It’s always been Stefan, I never loved you.” She was fixing that wound a little bit, which I think is pretty great.

So we know Katherine is a runner, and that Klaus told Stefan he’s going to help him catch her. Does that mean some of season 3 will take place outside of Mystic Falls?
I have no idea. That is a question to be discussed ad nauseam once we get back into [the writers room]. But definitely, she’s got her freedom, which she’s wanted for awhile, and we’ll see how long it lasts.
Moving on to the Damon deathbed scene — that was beautiful not only because it harkened back to Damon holding Rose in his bed as she lay dying, but also because, at least in my mind, you let Elena and Damon have a real moment without her going as far as saying “I love you, too.”
Elena, as we know, is one of the most compassionate people on the show — if not the most compassionate. It’s her own Achilles’ heel, how much she cares about others. So the extent to which she cares about certain people is always going to be a struggle for her. In that moment, Damon needed her forgiveness and her love, and she needed to give it to him. It was very pure for her. There’s a lot that happened in that moment, and season 3 is gonna be about exploring what it means to her, what it means to Damon, and certainly what it means to the Damon-Elena-Stefan relationship.
Will Joseph Morgan (Klaus) and Daniel Gillies (Elijah) be upgraded to regular cast members next season?
All I can say to you is, as I’ve said before, these two actors are extraordinary, and the story of the Originals is probably longer than the Bible and we can’t wait to dig into it.

I’m thinking that Damon and Elena will have to try to find Elijah so he can help them get to Klaus and Stefan. It is safe to say, at least, that we’ll see Elijah again?
I personally think that the world would be a very sad place if The Vampire Diaries never saw Daniel Gillies as Elijah again. I love him. He’s amazing. Until we start talking creatively about season 3, that’s the best I can do.
On to Jeremy… So he can see dead people now? Or is it just his past girlfriends because Bonnie told the witch spirits she loved him so they’d help resurrect him?
All I can say about that is: As Bonnie was told when she was tapping into that kind of magic to do something that goes against the laws of nature, there will be consequences. We’re just getting a slight tease of what those consequences are. For her, the unimagined consequences were worth it. Now if Vicki and Anna end up sticking around and remaining in Jeremy’s world in whatever way it is that they’re appearing, then in addition to supernatural consequences, obviously, there’s gonna be some romantic consequences as well. We’re taking the love triangle to a whole ‘nother level. Without a doubt, this is a story that is teeing up for our audience a whole new element of what we’re going to be doing on this show.
I know how upset you and Kevin Williamson were to lose Anna in last year’s finale. I love that you found a way to bring both those characters back that was totally unexpected. Was that an idea that just came to someone as you were breaking the story for this episode?
No, we had that in our back pocket pretty much the whole year long.

Will Alaric move in with Jeremy and Elena now? That’s what I’m hoping.
I think that what we were saying at the end of the episode is, we’re teeing up a new dynamic that is a family dynamic between Alaric and Jeremy and Elena. I don’t know that he himself is ready for that as a character. He might say yes out of obligation, or yes out of an emotional attachment, or he might run for the hills. Who knows? But definitely it is a question that will be asked when we come back, which is, “Are you our new daddy?” [Laughs]
How long ago did you come up with that idea? Because we all thought when Alaric’s body was taken over by Klaus that it was Matt Davis’ great exit. It’s awesome that he survived that, of all things, and now he is, theoretically, hopefully, becoming a more integral part of the story.

In our heads, we wanted to start building that dynamic at the beginning of this season. As Alaric and Jenna’s relationship got stronger, we wanted to see a friendship brew between Alaric and Jeremy at least, if not the whole family. And then it was just one of the story lines that, unfortunately, each time we had to add a werewolf or a hybrid into the mix got shoved aside. We didn’t get to do it the way we wanted to. So this is like a new beginning for Alaric and a launching platform for his character going forward that will finally make use of the character in as many ways as we can — not just this one — because Matt Davis is so important to us and his portrayal of Alaric is so great. We really want to try to give him what he deserves, which is the character’s strong point of view and great journey, however it plays itself out.
Since Klaus’ blood can cure a werewolf bite on a vampire, I’m wondering what it can do for a werewolf. Is that something we’ll find out in season 3? Is there more to Klaus’ blood?
There’s got to be, I’m sure. The rules of the hybrid and all that comes with being the hybrid, we’ve just scratched the surface.

When did the idea for the hybrid come up?
Before we wrote a single page of season 2.
[EW laughs in amazement.]
Yeah. That was always the plan.
I’m assuming we’ll see Tyler next season.
Absolutely. The series regular family is returning in full effect. Hopefully, we’ll be able to really dig deeply into Tyler’s friendship and blossoming romantic interest in Caroline and her potential interest in him — and also the conflict maybe between the sheriff and the mayor once the mayor comes into the loop, and the lengths they’ll each go to protect their children and possibly try to keep their children away from each other.
Final question: Is there anything more you can tease about where Stefan and Klaus are headed?
The direct road to awesomeness. [Laughs] That’s all I can say. We all couldn’t be more excited — Joseph and Paul Wesley included — to tell those stories. It is exciting to us as writers. It’s exciting to them as actors. We’re very energized about Stefan’s new journey and how Klaus plays into that and how that’s all gonna turn out.

'The Vampire Diaries' Nina Dobrev: 'I'm sure Elena's had dreams about Damon'

As if "The Vampire Diaries" heroine Nina Dobrev didn't have enough on her plate. Last season, her character Elena was torn between two of the hottest vampires broadcast television has ever seen.
This year, Nina's got her own set of fangs as she gears up to bring Katherine Pierce, Elena's evil vampire doppelganger, back to life.
We met Katherine in a series of flashbacks last year, but if the shocking Season 1 finale taught us anything, it's that we haven't even begun to scratch the surface of our new favorite villain. I caught up with Dobrev on the Vampire Diaries set in Atlanta and couldn't resist gushing a bit about her performance. As sweet as she is, Nina doesn't miss a beat playing the conniving back-stabber.
With all the attention that Katherine is getting as we gear up for Season 2, I didn't want to forget about Elena, either. I had to ask Nina -- if Damon (Ian Somerhalder) really had kissed Elena instead of Katherine, would Elena have kissed him back?
"I mean, I'm sure Elena has had dreams about Damon," Dobrev says. "I'm not sure if she was put in the position to kiss him what she would do. I feel like she has high morals, and she loves Stefan (Paul Wesley). It's always been Stefan."
Don't expect those dreams to come true any time soon, vamp fans. "I think that Elena's feelings for Damon are still friendly," Dobrev says. "She's concerned about him, and she definitely cares about him, but she and Stefan have been through so much. She wants to make that work."
Elena's love life right now is easy compared to her family situation. The last time we saw the Gilberts, Jeremy (Steven R. McQueen) had swallowed a bottle of pills and a vial of blood in the hopes of becoming a vampire, and Elena's Uncle John (David Anders) -- who is also her biological dad -- had met the wrong end of Katherine's knife.
And you thought your family was crazy!
"I can't say what happens to them," Dobrev says, "I don't want to ruin the fun! Things aren't going to get any easier in Elena's family situation, I'll say that much."

We admit it: we’ve officially been bitten by the vampire craze and The CW’s The Vampire Diaries is our latest fang-filled obsession. With equal parts teen angst and blood-sucking goodness, we are hooked on the Elena, Stefan, Damon love triangle. Throw sexy vamp Katherine into the mix and we can’t wait to find out what happens in the new season, premiering this month. We caught up with series star Nina Dobrev, 21, at Westwood’s Hotel Palomar for a taste of what we can expect.
SNMag: What initially drew you to the show and the character of Elena
Nina Dobrev: Well, I remember reading it and just being drawn to the fact that she was this average girl who was damaged in many ways and then I did some research and found out that I would probably end up having to play Katherine too, who is the complete opposite. This is one of the rarest, coolest opportunities in television, to play two people on the same medium.
SNMag: What can you tell us about Katherine coming back at the end of the finale last season?
ND: The only thing I can really tell you is that she’s back, and if I told you any more I’d have to kill you or bite you or something. But, yeah, she is back and you can just imagine now that she’s back in action things are just going to get more and more intense. It’s fun to see what she is going to do because she is just so spontaneous and crazy, but I’m just as in the dark as you are because they don’t tell us anything until we get there.
SNMag: Who do you have more fun playing – Elena or Katherine?
ND: I think like anything in life, whatever you’re deprived from or you don’t get to do as often, you end up enjoying more than anything else because it’s like a guilty pleasure. So, whenever I play Katherine, because I do it seldom, I have the most fun playing her.
SNMag: Do you think Damon and Elena could ever have a good, healthy relationship?
ND: “Damon” and “healthy” in the same sentence? That’s funny! I don’t know, I mean, with the way the season ended, it doesn’t seem as though Damon and Elena are an item in any way because he didn’t really care for her. He chose Katherine. Little does he know he is totally falling in love with Elena but Elena truly doesn’t feel that way. She sees him as a buddy. She sees him as her boyfriend’s brother, and, at times, a pain in the butt. But their friendship and their chemistry are definitely growing.
SNMag: If it were up to you, which brother would you choose?
ND: Well, I would choose the other brother, definitely – or maybe a mixture of the two. I think both characters have different qualities that are very appealing so it just depends. If you combine them, they make the perfect man because Stefan is committed and sweet and protective and loving, and Damon is spontaneous and crazy and fun and exciting. Every woman has to find that guy who pushes all her buttons, and Damon and Stefan push different buttons for Elena.
SNMag: What’s it like shooting in Atlanta?
ND: I like it, I really like it. It took a second to get used to in the beginning because, like any city, you have to give it a shot and explore and find out the little quirks about the town. But once we did, I found so many great restaurants and such amazing food and really great, nice, fun people and it’s so different from New York and LA and the big cities. We get an opportunity to be real, average people and hang out and go to restaurants and watch movies and not take ourselves too seriously.
SNMag: Do you guys all hang out off set?
ND: You’d think we’d get sick of each other by now, but we don’t somehow! Everyone is so sweet and supportive and loving and caring for each other. We can’t wait to get back to Atlanta and start filming again.
SNMag: Do you ever get to go back to Canada to visit your family?
ND: Actually, I just went back home to Toronto and hung out with my mom and my brother. I don’t get to go as often as I’d like to because of my work schedule but when I do it makes the time with them so much cooler. I’m really close with my mom so I miss her a lot and she travels a lot. She comes to visit me in Atlanta so I get to see her often that way.
SNMag: Since the show has become more popular, have you had any interesting fan encounters?
ND: Yeah, I’ve had tons of interesting fan encounters! This one time, I was at yoga with my mom and this girl came up to me while I was basically half-naked in a dressing room and she was asking me about the show and asked for an autograph and a picture with me while I’m sitting there, like I said, half-naked!
SNMag: We’ve heard that you’re a very big coffee and chocolate connoisseur - any specific preferences?
ND: Well, if we’re going to talk about coffee we’re going to have to talk about Starbucks and Coffee Bean! I change it up a lot, I love chai lattes and caramel macchiatos and double chocolate chip frappucinos with whipped cream…the sweeter the better, basically! When I have chai, I have dirty chai lattes with chocolate espresso in it. It’s a good pick me up. When it comes to just chocolate, lava cake is my absolute favorite. Hot, molten lava cake!
SNMag: What’s your feeling on this whole vampire craze? Do you keep up with shows like True Blood or the Twilight series?
ND: We’re all aware and supportive of each other’s shows and I have a lot of friends in them. I just finished shooting a movie with Kellan [Lutz], actually, a couple days ago. Vampires are hot. They’re sexy and mysterious and dangerous.
SNMag: Can we expect any werewolves on the show next season? Could you give us any hints?
ND: I can’t tell you about that. Maybe, maybe not, but I’m not allowed to talk about it. Sorry!
SNMag: When you’re not filming, how do you spend your free time?
ND: To be honest, whenever I have free time I just sleep. I chill and keep everything low-key. I’m a very low-key person because the rest of my life is so fast-paced and exciting. I like to just relax.
SNMag: Are there any spots in Los Angeles that you especially enjoy when you’re here?
ND: I hang out in Santa Monica a lot. If I can, I love to be by the water. And I love 25 Degrees, they have the best burgers and so does 8 Oz.! I go shopping on Melrose. I go to the Melrose flea market on Sundays if I can.
SNMag: You mentioned the movie with Kellan Lutz, Death Games, what can you share about it?
ND: The reason it appealed to me was that I always wanted to do an action movie. Also, I wanted to play a character that was a little older. I play a young girl in her 20s who Kellan marries. I’m his wife! So that was pretty fun. I’m pregnant in it too, I get to have a baby belly.
SNMag: What’s your favorite thing to do on a Saturday night when you’re not working?
ND: Two things: Either go out for an amazing steak dinner and just indulge in yummy food and then just watch a movie and hang out, or I’ll go out with the girls and go to a cool, dive bar. I like intimate settings where you can really talk and hang out with your friends and cool people.

'Vampire Diaries' Paul Wesley Teases: Katherine Is Capable of Pulling Stefan Away From Elena

While Stefan (Paul Wesley) may claim to be madly in love with Elena, once upon a time he only had eyes for her...um, look-alike. So obviously, we couldn't help but wonder how Katherine's return would affect him. Our interest was really peaked though when we caught a season two preview clip at Comic-Con, in which Katherine tells Stefan she loves him, only to stab him right after (hey, love hurts right?).
"So, she tells me she loves me and then stabs me — what’s going on there?," Paul said. That's what we'd like to know!
Paul implied that Stefan won't be able to entirely resist his former flame.
"Initially, he’s repulsed by it and then I think he was once in love with her to a certain extent — whether she manipulated him or not— but she’s super powerful and capable of pulling Stefan away from Elena a little bit and I think it will be interesting to explore that."
Hm, a little Katherine-Stefan action could certainly be interesting and setup the "love square" (between Katherine/Stefan/Elana/Damon) that we've been hearing about these past few months. P.s. Can we just say that Nina is kinda the luckiest.girl.ever since she gets to play the love interest to both our "VD" hotties?
But if you think the return of Katherine will send Stefan into another downward spiral -- think again. Our boy's finally embracing this little thing called happiness.
"I think what I look forward to with Stefan is that he gets rid of his guilt, gets rid of the dark cloud that he has hanging over him with being a vampire," said Paul. "I think he’s going to explore different parts of his personality that will make him happy at times and jovial and instinctive."
A happy Stefan? Don't mind if we do.

'Vampire Diaries': A First Episode 'Game Changer' Brings Bonnie And Caroline To Forefront Of Season 2

If finding out Jeremy's fate (vampire or not?!) on "The Vampire Diaries" season premiere didn't sound exciting enough, just wait until you see the new twist executive producer Kevin Williamson teased to Hollywood Crush at Comic-Con two weeks ago. Apparently, there's going to be plenty of action — and all of the characters will be around to watch it take place.
"Something happens in the first episode that’s sort of a game changer," Kevin said. "Everyone here was sworn to secrecy because it involves everyone. It’s going to help launch us into the second season in a fresh way and it will be fun."
And, thankfully, the game-changing event will also include our favorite female sidekicks, Katerina Graham and Candice Accola. If you thought the fact that both Kat and Candice were conspicuously absent from the "VD" panel at Comic-Con was fishy, fear not: their absence from San Diego was due to work scheduling, not casting cuts (we think...nothing's for certain on "VD" after all). Kevin told MTV News at the time, “Well, someone [referring to Candice] had to work today — well, Friday and tomorrow — when everyone was traveling!”
Actually, Kevin said he's excited to give the show's sideline characters a lot more camera time in season 2. "What’s nice about this is that Matt, Caroline, Tyler, and Bonnie were all sort of our secondary characters — they are not part of the triangle. Now, all the storylines I wanted to tell last year and didn’t have time, I can tell them. I’m grateful I can tell the stories I’ve been sitting on. It will involve Caroline and Bonnie and Matt and Tyler, and a new triangle will be born."
A new triangle, eh?
While Kevin didn't elaborate too much, he did confirm that the show is casting both the new character Vanessa (whom Damon and Alaric will meet while researching vampire mythology at Duke University), and another young lady. "At the moment, we’re also casting a love interest for a girl in between a friendship." Our theory: that girl will get in between Matt (Zach Roerig) and Tyler (Michael Trevino).
As far as specific plot information involving the supporting cast, Kevin shared an interesting tidbit about that little witch, Bonnie regarding that promise she made in the season 1 finale — to go after Damon if he kills another innocent person. "Bonnie had a wonderful season, and she’s going to hold true to her promise," Kevin said. "I think she says it in the first episode [of season 2]: she meant what she said, and she meant business. So she takes a point of view, and she doesn’t let up on it."

'Vampire Diaries' Season 2 Scoops!

When we last left "Vampire Diaries," (you know...sitting at the edge of our seats, biting our nails off...) Damon (Ian Somerhalder) had just kissed "Elena," (Nina Dobrev) who turned out to be Katherine, who then went on a killing spree right as the real Elena walked through the door. Whew!
That was months ago, and since then we've been obsessing over one big question — did Damon know it was Katherine (he did have that slightly perplexed look on his face) and if not, would he find out?
Well "VD" fans, get ready because we managed to get that answer (and many more!) straight from the source during Comic-Con 2010.
Ian confirmed to Hollywood Crush that Damon thought he was kissing Elena and when he learns it was actually Katherine (which he will!), it won't be pretty.
"I can definitely say that when he finds out it was not Elena, he will not be happy and he’s most likely going to blow his top — whoever is around is pretty screwed," Ian told us.
Angry Damon? We're so there. Of course, there's one teeny tiny catch. To get to the good stuff, we're going to have to wait a few minutes longer than we'd like. The premiere, it turns out, will start off exactly where the finale left off and then take us back by a few minutes.
"We do the meanest thing in the world, which is, we tee it up exactly to where we left off, and then we just rewind just a few seconds and show what happened in the moments between where we left and before Katherine did what she did to Uncle John," Julie Plec, show writer, said.
We love ya Julie, but now you're just toying with our emotions! Of course, the whole rewind thing might not be all bad. When we asked whether it meant we'd get to see the finale from the perspective of other characters Nina slipped and gave us an excited "Yes!," while Julie clarified by saying "A little bit...we fill in some blanks."

The finale left us with a lot of unanswered questions and high amongst them was whether or not Elena and Katherine would ever come face-to-face.
So, when we sat down with the cast, we made sure to ask ... and lucky for us show writer Julie Plec gave us just the answer we were looking for.
"The answer is yes, eventually. I won’t say when or how, but there is a time when Elena and Katherine will be in the same scene, in the same shot. It’s going to be interesting," Julie teased. "Interesting" is an understatement! We can not wait to see these two characters interact.
Apparently, neither can Ian.
"Is there a scene when Damon is actually in bed with Katherine and Elena?" Ian asked of his "maker." "Um, I’ll get on that, as soon as possible..." Julie responded (sarcastically, of course!). "That could be really cool," Ian replied with a smirk.
Well, now we know what to expect if Ian gets behind the "VD" director's chair!

Vampire Diaries' Julie Plec: The Love Triangle Becomes a Square

Villain vampire Katherine, who once turned the Salvatore brothers into sexy undead fangers, has returned to Mystic Falls — and boy, is she ready to cause some trouble. Vampire Diaries executive producer Julie Plec reveals that while the boys will discover her true identity quickly — since there was that little mix-up in the finale when Damon kissed Elena, but it was really Katherine! — the love triangle will get even more complicated in Season 2. Get the scoop on the new season below:
TVGuide.com: Nina Dobrev will be taking on two characters at the same time in the new season, playing both Elena and Katherine.
Plec: Nina is one of the nicest people in the world, and she makes the joke that Katherine is Nina on a Saturday night. Nina on a Saturday night is definitely feisty, but by no means an evil, manipulative, horrible troll. For her to be able to play both the moral center and soulful, compassionate character, and then the narcissistic, selfish, manipulative, naughty minx is big for her.
TVGuide.com: What is Katherine's goal this season?
Plec: She sets her sights on basically making sure that the Stefan [Paul Wesley] and Elena love story hits a snag. It's going to be fun seeing Stefan and Katherine come up against each other. Obviously it's fun to see Damon [Ian Somerhalder] and Katherine because there's a lot of history there, too, but the triangle becomes the square.
TVGuide.com: How long will it take Stefan and Damon to figure out it's not Elena?
Plec: They both know within the first 15 minutes of the first episode. Damon realizes he was duped, and Stefan comes face-to-face with Katherine. The fun of it is how Stefan responds to the moment, as opposed to how Damon responded to the moment.
TVGuide.com: You spent all of Season 1 leading up to Founders Day. What is the arc of Season 2?
Plec: What I loved about what Founders Day gave us is that we had this small town that was building up to its big anniversary, and the long arc of the show is that history repeats itself. We're going to do something like that this year, but we haven't landed on exactly what it is.
TVGuide.com: What came with the decision to kill off vampire Anna (Malese Jow) in the finale?
Plec: That is something, believe it or not, that Kevin [Williamson] and I never faltered on. We introduced the character knowing that her exit would [have] the most profound impact on Jeremy and Damon. For Damon, it was a glimpse of his humanity in that moment — he wanted to help her. We definitely knew she was there to make our heroes grow to a new level. We did it from a pure place and did it for a real reason.
TVGuide.com: Jeremy (Steven R. McQueen) is now so immersed in the vampire world, so what will we see for him this season?
Plec: We refuse to say what happens to Jeremy other than the fact that he's "alive." Regardless of that, the most important thing for Jeremy is that he's going to come out the other side of this with a much, much deeper and much stronger sense of himself. He's going to be asking what his purpose is on this planet, so to speak. It's all because of all the loss: parents, Vicki, Anna, and then his own desire to end his own human life.
TVGuide.com: How close will you stay to the novels as you carry on?
Plec: The deeper we get into the series, ironically, the more we're going to be taking from the books. That's cool because we strayed so far so quickly, just by definition of trying to shape a good story in the right way for television. To find ourselves naturally returning to the source material and the villains that you met, it's kind of awesome.

Vampire Diaries: Comic Con Fans Get a Sneak Peek at Season 2

"Vampire Diaries" panel concluded at Comic-Con 2010 and we're here with your minute-by-minute report. Between the laughs, sarcastic comments (cgi abs, anyone?) and uber attractiveness of the cast gracing the stage (Nina Dobrev, Paul Wesley, Ian Somerhalder, Michael Trevino, Stephen R. McQueen and Matt Davis. Plus, executive producers/writers Kevin Williamson and Julie Plec), it was hard for us to pick out our favorite part!
4:30pm Marcos Siega, who has directed several episodes (as well as "True Blood" and other shows) moderates. A Season 1 sizzle reel opens the panel.
4:35 Ian's arrival gets the biggest cheer, followed by Paul and Nina.
4:39 Kevin won't give away whether Jeremy is going to be a vampire or not. "It's the whole fun of the return."
4:40 Julie Plec says that Tyler's mom will step in as interim mayor now that her husband is dead. Kevin said fans of the book know about the Lockwood family curse, which Tyler will learn about this season. "His uncle comes to town for the funeral... He may hold a lot of answers."
4:42 "I take my clothes off all the time," Ian says to great cheers as Kevin wonders which cast member should follow suit. The mention of Damon and Elena together, as a possibility, gets huge cheers.
4:43 Kevin said Stefan and Katherine will come face to face in the very first episode. "Katherine is a pimp," proclaims Nina. She said she likes to play "a bad girl" and "break hearts." Kevin says it's "freaky and scary" how good she is as Katherine.
4:44 Paul thinks the temptation for living blood will "never escape" Stefan. Kevin won't say whether he'll turn evil. "I'll teach you Paul," says Ian. HA!
4:45 Ian says "the nice Damon freaks me out. I don't know how to do it well." He said his favorite scenes are "the fun nutty kind of Damon."
4:46 Julie says Paul's hair has "it's own number on the call sheet." Nina adds that it's helicoptered in. Kevin says he has the best abs. Ian says they are "insane." The crowd roars their agreement.
4:48 Does Michael prefer Matt's sister or his mom for Tyler? "Why not both?" When asked "Caroline or Bonnie?," Steve replied, "Caroline" and then quickly tried to change the subject.
4:48 Paul hands Nina a Hershey's kiss. She wouldn't say whether Paul or Ian is a better kisser. "I'm the lucky one. I get to make out with them both."
4:51 Michael says he's scared to death because they don't want his transformation to look corny or to copy any other shows. Kevin says "it's really hard to fake that on a weekly basis," mentioning the werewolf movie he did once. "There will be a transformation. It'll happen. It'll be part of his journey."
4:52 "Anyone I date ends up dying," Steven points out. Kevin says deaths on the show have to come from "a place of good storytelling." He said Anna was going to be a smaller character but they loved her so much they expanded.
4:54 Will Damon turn good or more evil this season? Kevin said it won't be the easy answer.
4:55 Steve would like to see "Jeremy fight back a little more." Julie said his journey is "becoming a man" and figuring out "who you're supposed to be."
4:56 Matt would like his character to have a "filthy, dirty sex scene" with Jenna.
4:58 Paul thinks Stefan "should join a traveling circus." He enjoyed "indulging in the blood." He wants to see him "fulfill that vampire need" once in a while.
4:58 The panel joked about Stefan coming out of the closet.
4:59 "I'd love to do a flashback of Stefan in the 1980s dancing and having fun," Paul said. "I'm serious."
4:59 Nina said she'd like to see Elana "take on Katherine." She said she loves the depth to their characters.
5:00 Ian said he'd like to see flashbacks of Damon's past as well. "Front and center at a Rolling Stones concert in '69." He'd also like to see Damon get Stefan's bedroom.
5:00 Michael wants Tyler to have more time in the scripts (audience reply: awww). "It'd be funny to see some Lockwood ancestors fighting the Salvatores."
5:00 Julie and Kevin said there will be a lot more flashbacks in Season 2.
5:02 A fan asked Nina which Salvatore brother is more attractive. "Stefan is very attractive because he is protective and loves Elana unconditionally. And Damon is very attractive because he's fun and spontaneous." Paul declares that Stefan has bigger fangs.
5:03 The next fan asks which of the guys is least like their characters. "Paul is a down to earth, fun, chill guy," Nina answers. "Ian is exactly like his character." The two guys said they love making fun of each other on the show and in real life.
5:06 Ian said "I can't judge Damon" because that's bad for an actor to do. "It's an interesting journey with this Damon guy."
5:08 Nina joked, "we are actually vampires" when asked about how the special effects work.
5:09 Marcos said the fangs aren't digital. Kevin said they are careful not to show the guys talking with their fangs in.
5:10 Nina said they have black dots on their faces for the post production process. Paul said they used to wear contact lenses but the eyes are CGI now. Marcos said the hardest thing to paint in CGI "are their abs" to big laughs.
5:11 "You guys rock! Thank you!" Nina tells the crowd. Paul points out how many more people are here than last year.
5:12 Paul would love to play Damon for a minute. A fan asks Paul for the name card in front of him -- and he gives it to her! To huge applause, no less. We're wondering how much that will go for on eBay next week!

5:13 Kevin makes a surprise announcement! They wrapped the first episode yesterday and they put together a taste of the Sept 9 premiere for Comic-Con! In the clips, Katherine tells Damon she never loved him and tells Stefan she came back for HIM. "The problem, Katherine, is that I hate you," Stefan says to her. She stabs him in the stomach and tells him "that sounds like the beginning of a love story, not the ending."
