90210's Trevor Donovan (Teddy) Is Poised To Exit

Another 90210 resident is heading for the hills.
Sources confirm to TVLine exclusively that Trevor Donovan — whose heretofore-closeted alter ego Teddy was at the center of a high profile coming out storyline last season — will not be returning to The CW soap as a series regular for Season 4.
Fans, however, have not seen the last of Teddy.
Although a spokesperson for the show declined to comment, a 90210 insider says Donovan will appear as a guest star in roughly five episodes this fall.
“I look back on getting this real-life story line as a blessing,” Donovan told TVLine in a statement. “To be able to simultaneously take on a challenging role and bring awareness to a relevant social issue was a win-win for me. I’m looking forward to what opportunities and adventures lie ahead.”
News of Donovan’s looming departure comes as 90210 undergoes a period of transition —both on screen and off. Season 4 will find much of the West Bev crew moving on to college — a rite of passage that triggered the exits of the show’s two remaining adult characters, Lori Loughlin and Ryan Eggold. Meanwhile, behind the scenes, Life Unexpected scribes Patti Carr and Lara Olsen have taken over as co-showrunners, replacing Rebecca Sinclair.

90210: The REAL story behind Teddy's big awakening

It went from being the best kept to the worst kept secret in less than a month: 90210‘s Teddy—the moneyed tennis pro played by Trevor Donovan—will tiptoe out of the closet this fall. In the following exclusive interview, exec producer Rebecca Sinclair reveals when she realized Teddy preferred guys over gals, previews his first same-sex romance, and recalls Donovan’s initial reaction upon learning that he’d be playing gay.
Why did you wait a whole season before starting to unravel the story of Teddy’s sexuality?
Rebecca Sinclair: [We wanted] to play a coming out story that features a kid we already knew. Instead of his sexuality being the first and defining characteristic, we’ve already gotten a chance to know Teddy before he explores his sexuality. Teddy’s an athlete, he’s a famous guy’s son, he’s blonde and hunky and yes, he also has a sexual orientation and that’s a huge part of his life. In a lot of ways I think that’s more interesting than Teddy is a gay athlete, a gay famous guy’s son and a blonde and hunky gay gentleman.
Did you know Teddy would be gay when he was first introduced?
Sinclaire: No. We thought he was just a womanizer. But then—and this often happens with characters—we started to wonder about the deeper life of the character. Was he a womanizer, or was he really covering for something?
How will Teddy’s coming out story be different from Adrianna’s?
Sinclair: There are obviously an infinite number of ways that teenagers can experience the realization that they are attracted to members of the same sex. And I guess our ultimate goal would be to tell a whole range of stories that depict different facets of the issue of gayness—or non-straightness, you might say. Adrianna’s was a much lighter story. For Adrianna, having bisexual feelings was confusing but it didn’t rattle her too deeply. She realized that for her, gender was less important than the individual in terms of finding someone she wanted to date. Frankly, for Adrianna as long as her significant other dotes on her, tells her she’s amazing, and that her hair looks pretty, she doesn’t care what gender they are. With Teddy, we’re attempting to tell a much more dramatic story about a something that rattles him to his core. Though, thankfully, we live in an age where lots of teens are comfortable with their sexual orientation and are able to come out when they’re in high school or even before, we didn’t want to ignore the reality that for lots of kids the road to self-acceptance for a gay teenager isn’t easy. This is going to be a dramatic, at times painful, but hopefully ultimately cathartic journey for him.
How will the story unfold? Does Teddy have an epiphany?
Sinclair: As a top-tier athlete and the son of a famous—and famously womanizing—actor, Teddy has always felt the need to keep up appearances. He’s had trouble reconciling the image that the world has of him with his own true sense of self. And he’s worked hard to repress whatever homosexual feelings he’s had. But early on in this season, something shakes up the structure of his life. With stability and routine out the window, he has trouble repressing who he really is. He acts impulsively and ends up hooking up with a guy. So it’s less of an epiphany than an impulsive act that sets things in motion.
Let’s talk about that guy (played by Kyle Riabko, inset above).
Sinclair: Kyle is absolutely terrific, charming and talented. He plays Ian, a self-confident, funny guy who is very much out and comfortable with his gayness.
Is there an immediate attraction?
Sinclair: I think there is an immediate attraction. But Teddy is very uncomfortable with the feelings he has and is certainly not up for the kind of mature normal relationship that Ian has had in the past and would expect from a boyfriend.
How long will Kyle be around for?
Sinclair: Hopefully he will be around for a long time. Certainly for season 3.
90210 doesn’t shy away from allowing its straight characters to express their sexuality. Will the show be as frank in its depiction of Teddy’s romantic relationships?
Sinclai: I hope so.
When did you inform Trevor that his character was going to be gay? How did that conversation go?
Sinclair: [Fellow EP] Jennie Urman and I called Trevor and told him the story we wanted to tell. I think he was surprised and maybe a bit taken aback initially. But as we discussed it with him and told him the kind of stories we wanted to tell, he got excited. I think he recognized that it was a good opportunity as an actor and he was excited by the idea of telling the story of a character’s journey that would mean a lot to gay teenagers and other teenagers who are learning to be honest about who they are and what they feel.

90210's Trevor Donovan Talks About His Character Teddy Coming Out Of The Closet

When the news broke that it was Trevor Donovan's character Teddy coming out of the closet in season 3, Trevor took to twitter to address the issue with fans. He tweeted:
"“I read all your tweets and know you are all curious about the ‘gay’ character this season. Let me say, gay or straight, relationships are relationships. Everyone goes through the same kind of troubles and joys. A gay storyline will have an added issue of dealing with judgment from others. Acceptance, by family, friends, society, and self is just one of the concerns the character will be going through. It is a part of life, and it should be portrayed. I was told, and am confident, [that] the storyline will be written very well and the change in the character will be organic, NOT overnight. It’s going to be a great season 3. I look forward to chatting with you all as we progress.”

Trevor also spoke with Just Jared at the Breakthrough of the Year Awards.

On his character going gay on 90210: “It was cool when they came to me with it, I was honored, flattered that they thought I could take on something like this and handle it in the way it’s being written and what we shot so far is done very, very smart, very intelligent. It’s really going to deal with his inner turmoil, the battle, and the struggles for self acceptance that I don’t think gets addressed enough.”
On his female fans being heartbroken: “It’s not an immediate thing and it’s not a cut and dry situation; there’s going to be a gray area, a transition.”
On Proposition 8 getting overturned: “I think it’s great that they are going back and revisiting it. To me it’s a no brainer, it’s like, why would there even be a question. There are traditions people hold fast to those things, and some people are scared of change, and to me it’s not change, it’s just people.”

90210's Annalynne Mccord and Trevor Donovan @ Hurley's Walk the Walk

Annalynne Mccord poses with her 90210 co-star Trevor Donovan at the Hurley Walk the Walk Teen fashion competition. Annalynne co-hosted the event and Lauren Conrad served as a judge. The event was aimed at supporting high school arts programs. Six high schools shared their runway looks for high school themed events, then competed for a chance to win $25,000 for their school.
Annalynne wore a casual outfit of a blazer, complete with itty-bitty True Religion shorts. I think she pulls them off well.

90210 Spoiler: Season 3's Gay Character Revealed

After finding out that "90210" is going the gay route again, we were a bit scared for them.
When Adrianna (Jessica Lowndes) rode the gay train for a few episodes in Season 2 then got off at heterosexual station again, many fans and critics were not pleased by the message that sent about sexuality.
But according to The CW, this time it's the real deal and now we can reveal who it is.
A source close to the production confirms to Zap2it that Trevor Donovan's character, Teddy Montgomery, is the male character who is coming out in Season 3.
In the Season 2 finale, we watched Teddy get back together (again) with Silver (played by Jessica Stroup), so we're interested to see how the writers will spin that storyline. We hear rehearsals between Donovan and his love interest, played by Kyle Riabko (as reported by EW), are currently underway
